I just heard my heater fire up, and I have the thermostat set to something in the mid-50s. One less reason to get out of bed.

You set your thermostat in the 50s?

Perhaps I should just turn off the heater entirely. My place is 1200 sq. ft. and has an electric central heater that is going to bankrupt me if I’m not careful. I have a level pay plan for electricity, but my monthly payment went from $96 to $149 despite using 4.8% less power than last year. Not having any income at the moment means I have to cut back anywhere and everywhere, and so I generally just heat whatever room I’m in rather than the whole house. That and sweats - lots of sweats. Winter sucks.

Yes. Yes it does. Note the -63 windchill.
Edit. At least it’s supposed to warm up this week.

Yikes - that’s cold! I shouldn’t bitch too much since we haven’t had a single flake of snow (yet), but I still don’t like winter all that much. Having been born and raised in the LA/Orange County area, I held the belief that snow was something you visited for fun, not something you should actually live with.
Now that I’m in the midwest I understand the appeal of having actual seasons, but I still don’t care much for winter. However, if someone else was paying the utility bills I might not mind it as much...

I’ve been in LA exactly once on a business trip. Another cold week like this one and I’m going to start looking at real estate listings again. Orange County sure had lots of cool cars.

I had to look up where La Crete was - holy fuck.
Out of curiosity, what goes on up there? I mean, it’s eight hours just to get to Edmonton.

We just got our first significant snowfall last night; and it looks like it’s just tapering off now. -9 Celsius ain’t so bad, but I’m inside playing Fallout anyway.

Nothing. Nothing goes on up here. Unless you like being outside in the cold. Ice fishing, snowmobiling, skating, hockey, hauling firewood. At least we have a decent internet connection up here. For me, it’s just Netflix and wrenching in my garage in my spare. Of which I have a lot since it’s cold 8 months of the year. The summers are awesome, though. It doesn’t really get dark all summer.

I would like to do ice fishing and snowmobiling; skating I’m not that great at but still enjoy from time to time; hockey is a disaster since I have never played it before (on skates), and my skating definitely not good enough for any sort of hockey; firewood I can haul. The problem is, I would never want to do this in that kind of cold. I can deal with small amounts of Ottawa cold.
At least a decent internet connection and a car to work on will easily take up a lot of time. Now, when I look at places I could potentially move to, I check to see if good internet service is available. If it’s really bad I rule it out immediately.
